Student Discipline

Today’s Irish Times carries a series of articles on student discipline here in Trinity College Dublin. Student pranks are very much part of the stereotypical view of college life, but there is very much more to it than that.

The Irish Times feature includes:
– an interview with my colleague, Dr Emma Stokes, the Junior Dean (the College Officer with responsibility for student discipline, and described in the article as the ‘Dean of Discipline’, a rather alarming title used, one suspects, for the sake of clarity); and
– a comparison of transgressions in the 1960s and more recently. My favourite is the sixties’ prank in which a car ended up on the roof of the Examination Hall. They don’t make ’em like that any more, and I’m sure that, on balance, Emma is relieved that they don’t.
