In issues such as these there are only power struggles between different interest groups. There are no neutral arbiters. For example, Myers churns out his racist filth but so long as he keeps the PC lobby happy and doesn't use the word 'nigger', he is safe. Being allowed to write what he likes in a mainstream periodical is a privilege not afforded to militant anti-fascists and so therefore the playing field is not level.

My difficulty with this kind of argument is who gets to define what is "fascist", and how can we be sure that this adjective won't simply be applied to all disfavoured or unwelcome speech?

This pious, Voltairesque drivel about freedom of speech is a fine example of middle-class intellectuals burying their heads in the sand. After all, when racist propaganda becomes racist attack, they are safely in their own comfortable middle-class areas. When Myer's fascist filth is tolerated in mainstream newspapers it goes from racist ideology to 'acceptable opinion'. The correct response to Myers is that of 'No Platform to Fascists'. We can get along well enough in this country without indulging his spite-filled diatribes.
